About the job

Charlotte’s Best Nanny Agency is assisting a family in Midland, NC in finding a Full-Time Nanny for their two children who are 4 years old (girl) and 2.5 years old (boy). The nanny would typically be needed Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. One weekend day a month would be needed as well, and can be scheduled flexibly based on the nanny’s schedule and preferences.

The best nanny for this family would be someone who loves caring for children and is calm, patient and loves learning. It is important that the nanny not only treats their children with love, respect, and kindness, but also helps teach the children the importance of being kind and loving to others as well as themselves. The family values upfront and clear communication, whether that be letting them know if the nanny can't make it a particular day so the parents can make alternate plans, or debriefing at the end of the day to discuss situations that may or may not have been handled in the best way by either nanny or the family so that we can learn together.

The children love to play outside, feed animals on the farm, walk to their grandparents’ houses (on the same property), go to the park, read books, and do arts & crafts. The nanny should help them be curious and explore things to help foster a love for learning. The farm has a pond, orchard, large garden, and play set so the nanny should be comfortable with engaging the children in a variety of outdoor settings around the property, such as picking blueberries, digging for earthworms, looking at bugs, setting up a sprinkler for them to play in, or smelling different plants.

Their daughter is demonstrating that while she is very curious, she has been bored with online preschool classes. The ideal nanny would help her enjoy learning by engaging her with preschool activities and social interactions. The ideal nanny would also enjoy engaging their daughter in a wide variety of conversations, as she likes exploring big ideas and seems to be quite the budding philosopher.

Their son loves trucks and anything with wheels – the nanny will quickly learn the difference between a backhoe, a front-end loader, and an excavator! He is a pandemic child and the family has been very locked down until now. They would like for the nanny to work with their son on getting more engaged with the world through social interactions (going to the park can be a great way to do this).

He also has level 1 autism (the mildest) and a sensory processing disorder (his body feels sensations differently than neurotypical people). He goes to therapy once a week. The parents and grandparents will generally take him to therapy but the nanny should occasionally join as well to help learn best approaches for managing his needs. For example, he needs extra time and coaching through transitions (such as using a visual timer, saying things like ‘we’ll be all done playing in 5 minutes and then we'll have lunch, ... in 2 minutes we'll have lunch, ... in 1 minute, bye-bye playtime, hello lunch’ etc). He wants to pick up or push heavy things and he finds comfort in compression items, such as a weighted blanket or vest.

Their son is a very bright loving child who wants lots of connection, interaction, and snuggles (his first phrase was ‘big bed snuggle’). When he has sensory struggles and gets dysregulated, he needs coaching in how to react to help himself feel better. The nanny should be observant and able to recognize the signs that their son is struggling and/or common triggers, and help him minimize or avoid getting upset, by helping recognize that he needs a quiet break/snack/nap, and/or do something that calms him like snuggling his favorite stuffed animal in his calm down corner. The parents will provide the nanny strategies that have worked best to be able to provide him the best possible care and are open to any strategies the nanny develops that would work for their son.

Both children will start a part-time preschool program in the fall of 2022 a few days a week. Both parents work from home most of the time.

It is not required to have extensive experience with autism, however previous autism or sensory processing disorder experience would be a plus. They do ask for a nanny to have a growth mindset, a passion for providing the best care to the children, and be willing to learn how to provide the best care for both of the children. The family is looking for a long-term nanny that can grow with the family over time and feel like a part of the family. potentially transitioning into some house manager responsibilities once the children start kindergarten should that suit everyone.
