Self-Directed Family Assistant Who Loves to Cook Needed for Busy Family in Detroit Suburbs - $25+ per hour - Job #780
A family in the Detroit area (Oakland County) is looking for a full-time nanny/family assistant to help care for their household and toddler. Their child goes to daycare full-time, so the position involves family assistant duties during the school year and then full charge nanny duties during the summer. Both parents work busy jobs outside of the home and heavily rely on a punctual and dedicated nanny/family assistant to help keep the household running smoothly! They are not the type of parents to micromanage and are seeking a nanny who is adept at taking initiative, has a high attention to detail, loves to cook, and will treat this as a professional job. They are guaranteeing 40 hours per week, but during the school year it’s rare the nanny actually works a full 40 hours. After dropping their child off at daycare, the nanny will come back to the house to tackle family assistant duties and as soon as those are completed, the nanny is free to leave for the day! The parents do not track hours or insist the nanny is at their house working for a full 40 hours - they are more than happy for an efficient nanny to work as little hours as needed to properly complete their responsibilities while still being paid for a full 40 (of course if working more than 40 hours, the nanny will be paid overtime).
One of their main needs is finding someone who is skilled in the kitchen and enjoys cooking. They are not looking for a gourmet trained chef, but they would like someone who is comfortable preparing from scratch, healthy meals and following recipes. The nanny/family assistant will be fully responsible for planning and preparing daily family meals, including making the grocery list and grocery shopping. Both the parents and child eat healthy, whole foods and their pantry is not typically stocked with processed, packaged snacks or foods. In addition to this, the nanny/family assistant will also help out with other household duties such as tidying child areas, assisting with laundry, cleaning up kitchen, running various errands, etc.
They describe their family as very outdoorsy and absolutely love for their child to get outside every day. Unless there is really bad weather, they believe in dressing appropriately and spending daily time outdoors rain or shine. The typical schedule involves getting to their house to do the morning routine with the child and then transporting them to daycare. The parents pick up the child on their way home from work, so unless it’s a sick day or daycare closure day, the school year involves about 1-2 hours of childcare in the mornings and that’s it. During the summer, the role will shift to ZERO family assistant duties and strictly nanny duties. During the summer, the family would like a nanny who fully engages their child and puts all of their focus on making it a fun and active summer! Daily outdoor time is a MUST, with most days spent playing and swimming at a nearby lake + various extracurricular activities. Interested candidates should love being outside, enjoy the beach/water, be a strong swimmer, and the type of nanny to plan other fun activities such as trips to the park, walks, bike rides, etc.
As for their parenting style, they are engaged and foster play-based learning. They believe in teaching independence and age appropriate life skills, and try to give their child as much freedom as they can unless it’s a safety issue. They strongly support that childhood is all about playing, getting dirty, and having skinned knees! They practice very limited screen time. When dealing with typical toddler things such as tantrums, their approach is to ignore the behavior and not give in. They are firm that they will not negotiate with toddlers and they are not raising a child believes they can negotiate their way into getting something. They try to say “yes” as much as they can, but if the answer is “no”, it’s “no”. Firm boundaries and consistency are very important to them, so interested candidates should align with this and be capable of following through as needed.
Their ideal candidate has a positive attitude and work ethic, and genuinely enjoys coming to work each day. Once the family outlines the expectations, they would like their nanny to take autonomy and ownership over their role without needing much direction. They would like someone who makes an effort to learn their household and family, and integrates themselves into it all. They value their nanny’s input and believe in open communication and brainstorming together to figure out what works best for both the household and their child. They would like for there to be mutual respect and willingness to receive feedback, as well as someone who doesn’t mind giving them a few text updates throughout each day. At the end of the day, their ideal candidate is someone who is active, playful with their child, a positive role model, teaches good manners, and is an energetic person that’s going to foster their child’s independence and sense of imagination. They have plans to expand their family, and would love to find someone they have a trusting, friendly relationship with and can grow with for years to come!
